Bio Sketch

Peter Jackson is the Director of the Aviation Studies Institute and a Professor in the Engineering Systems and Design Pillar at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. His current research is in estimating air traffic network capacity for which he applies optimization and machine learning concepts.

Prior to joining SUTD, Prof. Jackson served as the Director of the Cornell University Systems Engineering Program. He led the introduction of its online M. Eng. degree program in systems engineering which was subsequently ranked in the top seven such programs by US News and World Report. He has published over thirty articles, primarily in production planning and scheduling, and multi-echelon inventory management. He is the author of an introductory text on systems engineering, Getting Design Right: A Systems Approach. He advised 50 M. Eng. projects over 36 years of service at Cornell. He is a celebrated instructor of industrial engineering and the creator of dozens of experiential learning games and tools. He has consulted extensively with industrial firms, developing systems for production-inventory optimization (Quaker Oats), transportation scheduling (Clopay), readiness-based sparing optimization (Servigistics-PTC), business simulation (General Motors), and vendor-managed inventory optimization (Agco) among others. He was named a “most valuable colleague” by General Motors in 2012. He retired from Cornell University in 2016 in order to take up service at the Singapore University of Technology and Design.
